CHEF FEST 2018 proved to be a record-setting event, exceeding the event’s fundraising goal and raising $93,389 to support the arts and arts education across North Central Washington. Leavenworth’s Icicle Creek Center for the Arts has officially taken the reins for the 13th Annual Leavenworth Ale Fest to be held at the
Leavenworth Festhalle on Sat., April 13, 2019. After an application process, Icicle Creek, a nonprofit arts education and performance center in Leavenworth, was officially selected to take over the event from The Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum which founded the Leavenworth Ale Fest in 2007.
“We’re grateful to be assuming responsibility for this festival and will work hard to turn it into an important annual fundraiser in support of the the Arts and arts education across North Central Washington,” said Icicle Creek Development Director Jamie Howell, who is also serving as the new festival director.
Icicle Creek is undertaking a full rebranding of the event, launching a new website (leavenworthalefest.com) along with making a series of updates to the event itself including:
• More breweries: The 2019 Leavenworth Ale Fest will feature no fewer than 40 breweries, up from the 24 participating breweries in recent years.
• Single day event: The event will run one day only this year – Sat., April 13 – from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., with VIP tickets allowing early access at 5:30.
• Make Ale for the Arts Home Brew Competition: A new competition for home brewers has been added to the event with BJCP-certified judges.
The event will continue to feature live music, beer tastings (and ciders), and brewery awards, as well as continuing to take place at the Leavenworth Festhalle.
A portion of the event proceeds continue to be earmarked in support of The Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum, but the primary beneficiary will now be Icicle Creek Center for the Arts.
Organizers are currently soliciting breweries, home brew competition entries, event volunteers as well as area businesses interested in sponsoring the event. Further details are available at leavenworthalefest.com.
Icicle Creek Center for the Arts has announced three concerts for the 2018 Music in the Meadow line-up.
The first concert features Bruce Cockburn and is set for July 28. One of Canada’s finest artists, Bruce Cockburn has enjoyed an illustrious career shaped by politics, spirituality, and musical diversity. His remarkable journey has seen him embrace folk, jazz, rock, and worldbeat styles while travelling to such far-flung places as Guatemala, Mali, Mozambique, and Nepal, and writing memorable songs about his ever-expanding world of wonders. “My job,” he explains, “is to try and trap the spirit of things in the scratches of pen on paper and the pulling of notes out of metal.”
The August 4 date brings a festival format and atmosphere with headliner Hey Marseilles and featuring Shelby Earl, local favorites The Hoyer Brothers, and more. The day kicks off at 4PM with a Brew-Haha craft beer competition showcasing local and regional brewers in an audience-driven competition, and a Food Truck Face-Off with a variety of exciting regional food trucks with tasters for festival-goers to vote on and full menus to feed the masses.
Seattle native Hey Marseilles first won hearts across the US with its 2010 debut, To Travels and Trunks, an album that reveled in the education and inspiration only globe-trotting exploration can provide. With lyrical wayfaring abutting an instrumental palette that embraced folk tradition, the debut album gave musical voice to the universal longing for unfettered freedom. NPR called the record “sublime and heartfelt.”
Six years after the band first joined to jam at Seattle’s Gasworks Park, Hey Marseilles is an experienced band with a slew of major festivals (Bumbershoot, Sasquatch!) and a national tour under its belt.
Lastly, perennial favorites The Paperboys will return on August 11 with their unique blend of genre-bending, globe-hopping, joyous rock-folk-pop-world-roots music. This concert is proudly supported by Cascade Subaru.
For two decades, The Paperboys have been touring the world and lighting up stages with their free-wheeling blend of influences from Celtic and bluegrass, to Mexican son jarocho, brass bands, and Canadian roots. They’ve been called everything from Cajun slamgrass to worldbeat, they’ve received a Juno award (Canadian Grammy), plus two Juno nominations, released nine albums, and regularly play two-night bills in the Pacific Northwest.
All three concerts will be played as part of the Music In The Meadow series- on a stage nestled in a gorgeous meadow setting at the foot of the Enchantments. Guests are invited to bring a chair or blanket to sit on, and tickets are available at www.icicle.org

The Student Prince is a classic Broadway musical featuring great songs, clever comedy, and bittersweet romance. As this show borders on operetta, we will be seeking both musical theatre performers and aspiring opera singers. There are also several enticing roles for non-singers, both comic and dramatic. This production will be presented in-the-round in a delightful German beer garden setting created inside Icicle Creek Center for the Art’s Snowy Owl Theater.
The Student Prince will be performed Sept. 21-23 and 28-30 at the Snowy Owl Theater on the campus of Icicle Creek Center for the Arts in Leavenworth, WA.
What we offer:
- The unmatched natural setting of Leavenworth in September, and the lovely campus of the Icicle Creek Center for the Arts as a workspace.
- A unique, streamlined rehearsal process which minimizes travel.
- Overnight housing for out-of-area performers on successive rehearsal and performance days.
- Stipends from $200-400 for the run, with more substantial stipends for the leading tenor and soprano roles.
- A modest travel assistance stipend available in many cases.
- For understudies, an additional stipend, and the opportunity for one public performance.

Icicle Creek Center for the Arts, in collaboration with the Wenatchee River Institute and the 2018 Leavenworth Spring Bird Fest, invites submissions for the exhibition “Pacific Northwest Birds and their Habitats.” This juried art exhibition serves as an opportunity for a diverse range of artists to display their work in the Snowy Owl Theater during the celebrated 2018 Leavenworth Spring Bird Fest. Artists of all mediums that are ready for wall hanging are encouraged to submit work for consideration to this juried show.
The 15-20 piece “Pacific Northwest Birds and their Habitats” exhibition will be juried and curated by Icicle Creek Center for the Arts, Wenatchee River Institute and a local professional artist. The collection of work will be on display in the Snowy Owl Theater April 27-May 20, 2018 in celebration of the Leavenworth Spring Bird Fest, with a reception scheduled for May 17 from 5:00-7:00pm.
Artists over the age of 18 residing in Grant, Chelan, Douglas, and Okanogan Counties are encouraged to apply. Submitted pieces must be 36″x36″ or smaller and received by March 2, 2018.

The mission of the Leavenworth Spring Bird Fest is to provide educational and recreational activities focusing on birds, wildlife, and their habitats. This annual event promotes the awareness of conservation issues affecting our area, while also providing an educational and economic benefit to the community. It also connects with International Migratory Bird Day and includes a multi-cultural aspect linked to our Latin American neighbors.
Icicle Creek Center for the Arts will host the seventh-annual Vox Docs Film Festival March 16th and 17th in the Snowy Owl Theater. The weekend festival showcases the best documentaries of the year and titles that have been winning awards around the globe. In addition to a weekend of award-winning films, festival activities include a Q&A session with Editor Darren Lund, who served as the Editor on Dirtbag, the film featured on opening night, followed by an after party at Yodelin Broth in Leavenworth. The event is a fundraiser for the Young Filmmaker Program at Icicle Creek Center for the Arts.

Two Trains Runnin’ revisits an important moment in 1964 when America’s cultural and political institutions were dramatically transformed. The movie is more pointed and relevant today, in an era of renewed attention on police brutality and voting rights.

Through My Lens: Integrating Filmmaking in the Classroom
Teachers Professional Development Workshop
Come experience the transformative potential of integrating the filmmaking process into your educational setting. This workshop, geared for educators of grades 4-12, will showcase youth produced films from across the country and provide participants with a variety of curriculum resources to support the production of content-linked documentaries, public service announcements, and personal narrative videos. This introductory training is dedicated to demonstrating how to design breakthrough digital storytelling experiences that help ignite students’ passion for learning while also providing educators with dynamic new instructional strategies.
The workshop is instructed by Rick Wray, Utah Film Center Director of Education.

Icicle Creek Center for the Arts has announced Adrienne Shields as its Conductor for the 2018 Summer Symphony.
Adrienne Shields currently serves as the Music Director of the Mid-Columbia Youth Symphony and as the Assistant Conductor of the Mid-Columbia Symphony. She is also the Music Director for the Ellensburg High School Winter Musical and a recurring Music Director for the Valley Musical Theatre. She has previously served as Assistant Conductor for the Wenatchee Valley Symphony Orchestra, Guest Conductor for the Yakima Youth Symphony Orchestra, Assistant Conductor for the Central Washington University Symphony Orchestra and Opera Production, and Guest Conductor for the Kittitas Valley Youth Orchestra.
An advocate for arts education, Shields has coordinated annual orchestra festivals for high school students at Central Washington University and Pacific Lutheran University. She has been invited as a guest clinician by Ellensburg School District, Yakima Youth Symphony Orchestra, and Faith Bible High School in Hillsboro, Oregon. She has also served as a judge for the Harp division of the WIAA/WMEA Washington State Solo and Ensemble Contest and the YYSO Concerto competition.
She remains active as a performing musician. As a harpist, she has played with several ensembles including Olympia Symphony, Tacoma Concert Band, and Tacoma Opera. She has most recently played for Wenatchee Valley Symphony Orchestra and CWU Symphony Orchestra. Last year, she joined CWU Wind Ensemble to record the music of Alan Hovahness for Naxos Media Library.
Shields holds a Master of Music degree in Orchestral Conducting and Vocal Performance/Pedagogy from Central Washington University and a Bachelor of Musical Arts degree in Harp from Pacific Lutheran University.
The Summer Symphony Camp is an inspiring and intensive week of orchestral study and performance for young musicians in a spectacular North Cascade Mountain setting. Under the leadership of acclaimed music directors and coaches, this program allows talented young musicians to participate in intermediate and advanced musical studies. The atmosphere is challenging and at the same time, highly supportive and welcoming.

Michael Caemmerer, Director of Programming at Icicle Creek Center for the Arts, has recently returned from teaching at three intensive theater festivals. The three, three-day-long festivals were organized by the International Schools Theatre Association and held October 4-14 in London and Manchester, UK.
The festivals drew drama students from high schools in Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Central America, the Caribbean, and South America. Caemmerer worked with about 20 students at a time, and focused instruction on the creative process for theater, acting skills, theater traditions, directing techniques, and creative ways to devise original theater. Students also examined existing theater productions to learn to identify various elements.
“Each of the three festivals brings focused and intense work. It’s an honor to work with these drama students who have been selected to attend from around the world. I always come away with equal parts exhaustion and exhilaration, and am constantly impressed with the quality of work that the students produce,” explained Caemmerer.
Caemmerer has served as the Director of Programming at Icicle Creek Center for the Arts since the spring of 2014. He brings his talents and passion as an arts educator, theater director, and arts program developer to the non-profit organization. Prior to returning to Leavenworth, he worked internationally, most recently serving as Head of Performing Arts and Theater Manager at the American Embassy School in New Delhi, India. His theater background has included program and consultant work in London, New York, Chennai, and around the globe. He is currently serving as President of the Grunewald Guild Board of Directors.
The International Schools Theatre Association (ISTA) began with one high school festival in 1978. Today, they are the global workshop provider for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme Theatre with a membership in excess of 250 teachers, schools and organizations. The ISTA works with 150 freelance artists hired for their excellence in theatre practice, classroom management and international mindedness and produces over 50 events each year.
