Life has rapidly changed for everyone in America and the effects can be felt in every industry, sector and household. With kids here in Wenatchee Valley on a break from school for at least six weeks and many of us stuck at home, we are left to wonder, what is there to do?
There are many online resources to help you out with this predicament. From hiking the many trails around the area, to continuing education, to even playing video games, USA Today has a great, and comical, list of what people can do to keep the boredom at bay. And, who would have thought, three out of the first five relate to the ARTS!
One idea that is perfect for around Leavenworth is to get out and enjoy the outdoors. With the sun shining and it getting warmer everyday, one of the best ways to social distance is to get out into the fresh air. Going for a walk or a hike is a perfect recipe to pass time while staying healthy. Make sure to stay 6 feet apart!
Are you, or someone you know, off from school right now? Stay sharp by starting to write. A daily journal, a blog, poetry, pretty much anything. Get those creative juices flowing and who knows, you might find your new favorite hobby!
What about that piano collecting dust? Or the guitar over in the corner a little out of tune by now? What a great time to learn, and an even better time to brush up on your skills. Have a musical family? Have nightly family jam sessions! Penn Medicine talks about the benefits of learning an instrument saying, “While learning to play an instrument as a child provides life-long benefits to the brain, taking music lessons in your 60s – or older – can boost your brain’s health as well, helping to decrease loss of memory and cognitive function.”

The health and wellbeing of Icicle Creek staff, attendees, and community is paramount during this time. This, along with the recent announcement made by Gov. Jay Inlsee where gatherings are limited to 50 people, is why Icicle Creek Center for the Arts has decided to make this difficult decision.
Icicle Creek Executive Director Rebecca Ryker stated, “Our commitment remains being a responsible member of this community and to helping all of us to stay as safe and healthy as possible.”
Icicle Creek prides itself on spreading the vibrancy of the arts through many facets including, performances, exhibitions and most importantly, education where year-round programming impacts more than 5,000 students throughout North Central Washington.
Icicle Creek Center for the Arts will work hard to use the impact of arts to spread positivity during these trying times. Make sure to check emails, social media and other forms of communication as Icicle Creek will do all it can to maintain some sense of normality and its relationship with the Icicle Creek family.

14th Annual Leavenworth Ale Fest CANCELLED Over COVID-19 Concerns
Leavenworth, Wash., March 12, 2020 – The 14th annual Leavenworth Ale Fest, scheduled to be held in the Leavenworth Festhalle on Sat., April 18, has officially been cancelled in response to growing concerns over the spread of coronavirus.
In light of a recent edict from Gov. Jay Inslee limiting mass gatherings in Washington State, Icicle Creek Center for the Arts has decided to forgo the annual fundraiser which brings in breweries and craft beer enthusiasts from across the state each Spring.
“This has not been an easy decision to make,” said Icicle Creek Executive Director Rebecca Ryker. “But it is driven by a commitment to being a responsible member of this community and to helping all of us to stay as safe and healthy as possible.”
The event, which sold out in 2019, is one of two major fundraisers for the non-profit organization that presents year-round arts education and programming that impacts more than 5,000 students throughout North Central Washington. A portion of the proceeds would also have gone to the Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum, which founded the event before passing it along to Icicle Creek in 2019.
“This is a financial hit to everyone involved – to this non-profit, but also to the Festhalle and to the City of Leavenworth,” said Ryker, noting that not only will they miss the opportunity to raise much-needed funds, but will lose thousands in unrecoverable expenses already made in the process of planning the event. “It is at times like these that non-profits need your support more than ever.”
All current Ale Fest ticket holders will be contacted and have the option to receive a full refund or convert their ticket purchases to a donation supporting Icicle Creek.
Normal operations and other programming scheduled for March will continue as scheduled, though Icicle Creek will continue to follow guidance from public health authorities as the situation evolves. The organization is taking measures to reinforce good hygiene and sanitization policies with staff, volunteers and visitors, as well as working with its janitorial service to ensure proactive sanitization of surfaces that the staff and public come into contact with. Visitors and event attendees are encouraged to stay home if they or anyone in their home are symptomatic.

In order to promote everyday preventive actions, we are reinforcing good hygiene and sanitization policies with staff, volunteers and visitors, and we are working with our janitorial service to ensure they continue to provide high level cleaning of our facility, including proactive sanitization of surfaces that the staff and public come in contact with. We would like to urge our visitors to stay home when they are sick, or when someone in their household is sick.

Our campus, located three miles up the enchanting Icicle Road, has eight cabins available to the public. Whether you need a relaxing weekend getaway, a place to crash after sightseeing in Leavenworth, or want to stay the night after an awesome event on campus, we have the perfect retreat for you.
