Three pieces on this program are inspired by cultural and musical traditions from distant and exotic regions.Lou Harrison’s interest in world music, particularly that of Indonesia, led him to compose extensively for Javanese gamelan instruments. In writing his only Piano Trio, Ravel was influenced by Basque dance rhythms (evident in the first movement) as well as Malaysian poetry, with the second movement titled Pantoum referring to the structure of the verse.Cage’s Sonatas and Interludes grew out of his study of Indian music and the teachings of Sri Lankan historian and philosopher Ananda Coomaraswamy. In the composer’s own words, “pieces with bell-like sounds suggest Europe and others with a drum-like resonance suggest the East.”This concert marks Gamelan Pacifica’s first appearance at the IcicleCreekMusicCenter. In addition to Harrison’s Double Concerto, they will also perform traditional repertoire of Central Java. 2:30 PM pre-concert talk and gamelan demonstration with Jarrad Powell, Director of Gamelan Pacifica.
