SEPTEMBER 2012-MARCH 2013
Program Director: Dan Jackson
About Icicle Creek Youth Symphony (ICYS) ICYS will begin its eighteenth year of providing high quality orchestral music instruction to elementary, middle school and high school student instrumentalists throughout North Central Washington. The program offers two full semesters that parallel the school year. Students involved in ICYS come from the Greater Wenatchee area, Chelan, Leavenworth, Cashmere, Peshastin, Dryden, Quincy, and locations as far away as Twisp, Moses Lake and Ellensburg.
In the 2012-13 school year, the program will be comprised of the following two ensembles:
Youth Symphony: Conducted by Kara Hunnicutt, this Orchestra provides qualified students the opportunity to rehearse and perform substantial works from the Baroque period to the present in a full symphony orchestra. Comprised of student musicians from across the North Central Washington region alongside professional musicians and educators who serve as faculty coaches, the Symphony Orchestra provides an intensive orchestral training ground for serious students of music.
Academy Orchestra: This ensemble is designed specifically for less experienced string players with limited or no previous orchestral training. The Academy Orchestra is open to students who have played one year or more and who read music. Students will learn fundamental string techniques and receive instruction in the principles of ensemble playing while preparing a selection of short pieces for performance.
Auditions Auditions are not required for returning students this year. Auditions for new students will be held just prior to and during the first rehearsal.
Symphony Orchestra Audition Requirements Each student should be prepared to play a 2- or 3-octave major and minor scale plus a short solo piece of their choice that shows their level of proficiency. Some sight-reading may be included. Auditions will last up to 5 minutes.
Academy Orchestra Audition Requirements Students should prepare one scale of one or more octaves and part of one piece for auditions.
Concertmaster Violinists interested in the Concertmaster position should contact the director.
Fees and Registration Tuition for the 2012-13 school year (Fall and Spring semesters): Youth Symphony: $400, payable in full or by the semester at $200. Academy Orchestra: $300, payable in full or by the semester at $150.
ICYS is proud to offer work-study scholarships to assist deserving students and families with the financial costs associated with ICYS membership. We at ICYS are committed to supporting all students regardless of financial need.
School Participation Policy ICYS is committed to supporting the public and private school music programs of NCW. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in their school music programs.
